Reliability of gas engines as the foundation of stable production

Almex operates three biogas plants—two in Mramorak and one at their farm in Crepaja, where a solar power plant has also been installed. The system utilises Jenbacher gas engines, each with a 1 MW capacity, which require continuous operation and proper lubrication to consistently deliver the designed power output.

“Even one hour of downtime can result in losses of several hundred euros,” emphasizes Dušan Dobriković, Director of the Biogas Division at Almex.

Each Jenbacher engine has a 750-liter oil reservoir, along with an additional 250-liter top-up tank that helps maintain pressure and ensure smooth engine operation. Oil changes are scheduled every 2,000 operating hours, but due to high working temperatures and aggressive biogas components, detailed oil analysis is performed every 500 hours at the LubAnac laboratory in Belgium. These analyses are essential for ensuring continuous operation. Based on key indicators—such as base number, acid number, and the presence of metal particles, water, or coolant—experts determine whether the oil change interval can be safely extended.

“On an annual level, this can mean one fewer oil change, one fewer engine service, and most importantly—uninterrupted engine operation,”

In addition to obvious savings in oil consumption and maintenance, biogas facilities offer multiple added benefits:

  • Efficient use of animal waste from livestock production
  • Reduced methane and CO₂ emissions
  • Utilization of engine-generated heat to warm farm facilities
  • Application of the by-product, post-digestate, as natural fertilizer on fields
