Support for the “Plant your own shade” innitiative

Belgrade, December, 30th 2020 – This year Total supported planting the European ash as part of the “Plant your own shade” initiative, by donating 500 saplings for citizens to plant. Although limited by the current epidemiological situation, the planting was accomplished through individual actions, in which the participants planted 30,000 saplings across the entire country. Organized by the NGO “Zeleni razvojni centar”, the “Plant your own shade” initiative has been working for 5 successive years on the afforestation of urban areas, with great support coming from individuals and socially responsible companies.

As numerous research have shown, the benefits of urban trees are manifold. From air cleaning and cooling the city streets, protecting the ground from slides and erosion, to their beneficial influence on people’s physical and mental health, and maintaining biodiversity, including the habitats of birds and insect pollinators.

Employees at Total Serbia who took part in this initiative planted 10 saplings in the Zvezara forest, which symbolize the 10 years since the foundation of Total’s affiliate in Serbia. The three colleagues enjoyed spending time in the nature and having the opportunity to contribute to the local community in this manner. In the years to come, they will be able to monitor the growth of the trees they planted.
