How to warm up your car properly

Kako pravilno zagrejati motor

There are different opinions when it comes to starting the engine, especially on winter days when the temperature drops below 0°C, but one thing is certain - the engine needs time to reach its optimal operating temperature.

While experts advise warming up the engine while driving, you must keep in mind that this advice only applies if you are an experienced driver who knows how to warm up the engine at low RPMs. Otherwise, the moving parts of the engine wear out because the engine oil also needs time to heat up to its operating temperature to effectively perform its lubrication function. In any case, it is better to choose low-viscosity oil, such as 0W-30, for areas with very cold winters. You should not skimp on oil because the quality of engine lubrication, and consequently its longevity, depends on it.

If you do not have enough experience to warm up the engine while driving, there is nothing wrong with starting the engine and staying in the parking lot for a short time. What is very important is to start the engine without pressing the gas pedal, regardless of whether it is cold or warm. Pressing the gas pedal while the car is stationary damages the engine because it does not have proper lubrication.

Keep in mind that for diesel engines, you should always wait for the glow plug indicator light to turn off before starting the engine. For turbocharged engines, it is also important not to start driving immediately after starting the engine. If the engine is cold, let it idle for a few seconds before driving to ensure the turbocharger is adequately lubricated.

Considering all the above, the best advice we can give is to sit in the car on cold winter mornings, start the engine, wait a few minutes without pressing the gas pedal if you are not sure you can warm up the engine while driving, start slowly without sudden accelerations, and gradually shift to higher gears.

Our advice is that if you notice any irregularities on the car, contact one of our partner services from the TotalEnergies Workshop Concept.
